The Annunciation 2018

Client: St Peter's church, Kinglake

In another project for St Peter’s church, Kinglake, I worked with local artists Michelle Stuart and Gary Cornelious to produce a work showing the Annunciation. Here Mary is told by the angel Gabriel that she will bear the Christ child. The images existed in the grain patterns of a blackwood slab which had been harvested from a tree which had been growing on the St Peter’s church block but which perished in the Black Saturday fires. Michelle produced a set of cast glass tablets using amber glass which had been recovered from the ruins of the old church. Each tablet bears an impression of a plant which grows close to the current church. The work thus brings the biblical story of the annunciation into the particular environment of Kinglake.
