The Maltese Community Center Mural 2015
Client: Maltese Community Council of Victoria
I was very excited to receive a commission to design a laminated glass mural, to be installed in the hall of the Maltese Community Center. The brief was that the work should be colorful, carry a lot of movement, and evoke feelings for Malta as the home country and culture of members. We felt that the best way of creating the mural would be to design a giant print in the sections presented by the existing window frames and then laminate it between sheets of clear glass. A white translucent interlay would be placed behind the print to intensify the colors and filter out the view of high rise flats in the background. The subject of the mural was a stylized panorama of the Maltese capital Valetta. I hand drew each section at one tenth scale and then scanned the artwork into an Adobe graphic art program called illustrator. The program allowed the sections to be scaled up to full size and have color added. These files were then printed onto a mylar medium. The mural was opened on May 3 and has been very well received.
