Life Cycle windows
Client: Phillip Toyne and Molly Olsen Harris
The Life Cycle window was commissioned by my brother Phillip and his wife, Molly as part of rebuilding their house which had burnt down. The design represents the sun and earth as the originators of Life. Living things emanate from the interplay of light and earth with colours which represent the repeating cycle of birth and decay. The windows presented a huge technical challenge as they had to be double glazed and contain an outer layer of thermal glass. The double glazing presented me with the opportunity to create a three dimensional grid in the design and to place colored and textured glass so that they both contribute to what is seen when light passes through them. Another consideration was the need for the design to interact with the beautiful view over the garden. This meant that color and form had to be controlled to create harmony with the background.
